As part of Torrens Energy' pioneering hot rock geothermal resource exploration in the central part of the Torrens Hinge Zone, a two-dimensional reflection seismic survey traverse was acquired using low-impact Vibroseis signal source equipment in the region between the Flinders Ranges at Angorichina, passing westwards through Parachilna and Motpena Station, to the edge of Lake Torrens. This seismic survey was originally proposed for a grant of PACE Initiative Year 5 funding in order to allow the making of an improved geological interpretation of the local lithology and structure extending from the surface to the basement (a distance of ~ 5 km). It was intended to use this interpretation to create a geological and temperature model of the Parachilna region which could be tested via intermediate depth drilling (to ~1.5 km) and, if such results were encouraging, by subsequent production drilling (to ~5 km). Exploration for high temperature rocks amenable to artificial geothermal power generation processes requires firstly locating regions of high heat flow covered by thermally insulating sediments. Torrens Energy had already conducted scout drilling during 2007-2008 of five holes to depths of 600 m in the Parachilna area, and this work had identified local heat flows of up to 120 mW/m2, which figure is amongst the highest for heat flows so far identified anywhere in South Australia. This unusual geothermal anomaly is considered likely to be an indication of the presence of concealed Olympic Domain (~1595 Ma) aged basement within the Torrens Hinge Zone, between the Gawler Craton and the Adelaide Geosyncline. Approximately 40 line km of 120-fold reflection seismic data was recorded during January 2009 by Terrex Seismic Pty Ltd, the raw seismic data was processed by Velseis Processing Pty Ltd, and the resulting processed seismic section was then interpreted by the licensee company with the aid of expert staff in PIRSA's Geological Survey Branch and in Geoscience Australia. Torrens Energy considered the seismic survey to be a great success, with the final processed seismic section providing a clear image of the subsurface geology of the area between the Flinders Ranges and Lake Torrens. It has since been concluded from an initial interpretation of the results that the long-lived Ediacara Fault marks a domain boundary between the Torrens Hinge Zone, to the west of the fault, and the Delamerian Fold Belt (akin to the outcropping Flinders Ranges) east of the fault. The depth to the top of the basement in the area west of the Ediacara Fault is now considered to be between 4 km and 5.5 km.
