In May 2009 a total of 45 aircore blade or hammer holes (total penetration 1332 m) were drilled by Adelaide Resources along six northeast-southwest trending traverses laid out immediately south-west of Cleve, to test a conceptual unconformity - style uranium target on EL 3834, in a drilling programme that had been approved for partial subsidy as a PACE Initiative Year 5 project. Weakly anomalous uranium (maximum 1 m @ 54.1 ppm U) was intersected in two holes lying on adjacent traverses. Elevated lead and zinc were also encountered. Bedrock lithologies include Hutchison Group mica schist and iron-rich rocks that are interpreted to be Middleback Jaspilite BIF. Magnetic susceptibility readings made on drill chip samples confirmed that the iron-rich rocks are the source of the linear magnetic anomalies present at the target. Minor graphite-bearing schist is also present. The presence of weathered quartz pebble conglomerate and sandstones in a number of holes also confirmed the theory that the current surface is approximately at the unconformity between the Blue Range Beds and the underlying Hutchison Group basement. The results of the drilling programme have confirmed the overall geological model and exploration concept developed in the PACE proposal, and support the current belief of Adelaide Resources, other explorers and PIRSA, that the Cleve district remains prospective for finding unconformity - style uranium deposits.
