Interest was centred on the Whyalla Sandstone - Pandurra Formation stratigraphic contact (the locus of the Gunyah Lake mineral occurrence), and on a quartzite unit developed adjacent to the Woocalla Dolomite Member (the locus of the House and Main Open Cut orebodies), for the several purposes of further defining and then sampling continuations to known mineralisation, for conducting stratigraphic investigations, and to explore these settings for new copper deposits. The work included undertaking stratigraphic field mapping of sand-covered portions of the licence at scales of 1:5000, 1:10,000 and 1:17,000, supported by stratigraphic drilling traverses (about 550 percussion holes totalling 5500 m), doing extensive geochemical sampling of lake muds in formerly unexplored lagoonal areas, conducting near-mine drilling at Mount Gunson mine, and making IP and EM surveys over resultant downhole geochemical anomalies. The stratigraphic drilling was highly successful, as it intersected significant new copper sulphide mineralisation at Cattlegrid in January 1972, where follow-up drilling confirmed the economic importance of the discovery.
