Basal Umberatana Group glacial tillitic sedimentary sequences and upper Burra Group interglacial arenaceous sediments were explored for possible economic stratabound gold mineralisation in an area located near and to the north of Mintaro, which includes the historic Mintaro Goldfield situated 2 km to the south-east of the town. Across the licence as a whole, the search emphasis was for hydrothermal gold in quartz veins associated with stratal dilational zones developed near the hinges of regional anticlinal folds and inferred related thrust faults. Following the conduct of a literature review and data interpretation, limited initial rock chip sampling of lodes in bedrock at the Mintaro Goldfield (5 samples) returned values of up to 2485 ppb Au and 332 ppm Cu from quartz-ironstone-phyllite breccias having a weathered limonite-goethite matrix. Orientation stream sediment sampling undertaken in the vicinity of the goldfield identified a short, <900 m long gold dispersion train extending downstream from the mineralised outcrop, but it was believed that this unexpected restriction was due to dilution caused by artifically high inputs of detritus resulting from recent agricultural activity occurring nearby. 87 soil samples were collected across a 100 m grid laid out over the historic alluvial goldfield, and elevated gold values ranging from 9.7-60.4 ppb Au were returned from within this 0.6 square km area. Three promising structural targets were identified from an interpretation of regional geophysical data (magnetics, gravity and SRTM elevation), being chiefly arcuate flexures cross-cut by later northwest-trending significant lineaments. An inferred north-south aligned thrust fault was also mapped, underlying a linear topographic low which parallels synclinal folds that are preserved along the eastern and western margins of the licence area. The recommended follow-up programme of additional detailed stream sediment sampling, rock chip sampling and 50 m x 25 m grid soil sampling, plus ground-based geophysical profiling of the better geochemical and structural targets, was not commenced before a decision was made to surrender tenure.
