Exploration for diamonds undertaken by Flinders Mines Ltd (as part of the JV agreement made with Tasman Resources) for the subject 39 square km of relinquished portions of EL 3343, located about 70 km south-west of Coober Pedy, commenced with a re-assessment of open file airborne magnetic data in an attempt to identify subtle magnetic signatures associated with possible kimberlites. The data were reprocessed to remove noise and to enhance subtle magnetic features. The results were used to identify a number of key exploration areas where Jurassic kimberlites may have been extruded through the crystalline basement, and may still exist beneath the Jurassic Algebuckina Sandstone. In April 2008, 'postage stamp' helimag surveys (each covering 1-2 square km) were flown over prospective magnetic anomalies picked from the regional data. Anomalies having inferred affinities to kimberlite pipe magnetic signatures were selected for follow-up. These anomalies were ground checked, and heavy mineral samples, where relevant, were then collected for diamond indicator mineral (DIM) identification. The purpose of the sampling was to try to detect DIM grains which could have been derived from a secondary (transported) source in the local area, or may have been brought to the surface by bioturbation. One 10 litre loam sample was collected on EL 3343, but was found to be negative for DIMs. Four anomalies on EL 3343 were selected to be drilled. The drilling programme utilised a KD 150, aircore/RAB capable rig, and took place in March 2009. Four holes for 170 m were completed to test the four magnetic targets. Three of the holes were successfully drilled into basement, while the fourth was terminated in bedded swelling clays (?lacustrine environment). Basal Jurassic-Cretaceous sands from the three basement-penetrating drillholes were sampled for DIMs. All heavy mineral samples were mineralogically observed, and potentially interesting minerals were picked and sent for microprobe analysis, but the results were negative for DIMs. Due to the apparent lack of DIMs present in the basal sands, the potential for existence of a nearby kimberlite (<10 km away) is considered low. Seven drill chip samples were collected from basement rocks for a full elemental suite of geochemical analyses. No anomalous gold or base metal values were returned.
