Exploration for diamonds undertaken by Flinders Mines Ltd (as part of the JV agreement made with Tasman Resources) on the subject EL, located about 30-45 km east of Commonwealth Hill, commenced with a re-assessment of open file airborne magnetic data in an attempt to identify subtle magnetic signatures associated with possible kimberlites. The data were reprocessed to remove noise and to enhance subtle magnetic features. The results were used to identify a number of key exploration areas where Jurassic kimberlites may have been extruded through the crystalline basement, and may still exist beneath the Jurassic Algebuckina Sandstone. In April 2008, four small 'postage stamp' helimag surveys were flown over prospective magnetic anomalies picked from the regional data, that showed features which were believed to have affinities to kimberlite pipe magnetic signatures. These anomalies were ground checked, and one 10 litre loam heavy mineral sample was collected for diamond indicator mineral (DIM) identification. The purpose of the sampling was to try to detect DIM grains which could have been derived from a secondary (transported) source in the local area, or may have been brought to the surface by bioturbation. The EL 3340 loam sample was found to be negative for DIMs. Three anomalies on EL 3339 were selected to be drilled. The drilling programme utilised a KD 150, aircore/RAB capable rig, and took place in March 2009. Two holes for a total penetration of 57 m were drilled into crystalline basement (granite), while the third hole was terminated at 42 m depth in saprolitic granite. Drill cuttings samples taken from three x one m splits collected directly above the inferred basement contact in each drillhole were examined for DIMs. The separated heavy mineral concentrate was mineralogically observed, and potentially interesting minerals were picked and sent for microprobe analysis, yielding a positive result for DIMs in one sample, when two weathered chromite grains were recovered. The microprobe geochemistry of these grains suggests that they are derived from kimberlite or kindred rock types. However, a proximal source for the grains, i.e. a nearby kimberlite (<10 km away) is considered low. One drill chip sample was collected from the basement granite for a full elemental suite of geochemical analyses. No anomalous gold or base metal values were returned.
