As part of North's continuing exploration for possible buried syngenetic, Broken Hill - type stratiform base metal deposits in the Eukaby area, extensive deep directional diamond core drilling (9 of 14 holes totalling 11,603 feet) was carried out in addition to detailed geological mapping, surface geochemical sampling and many petrological examinations of ore and bedrock samples. The drilling was judged to be insufficient to completely assess the perceived potential of all the prospective ore-bearing structures recognised in the area, and it is expected that further drillable targets may still be found. However, the conduct of a trial gravity survey (314 stations read along 4 traverses covering 6 line miles) could not clearly resolve any drillable gravity anomalies arising from bedrock sources hidden under more than 100 to 300 feet thickness of deep alluvial cover. The collection and assaying of prevalent surface lateritic 'iron pebbles' (330 samples) gave promising results, returning anomalies of up to 3550 ppm Pb, until it was realised that the pebbles represented a widely fluvial transported regolith component having no direct geochemical relationship to underlying bedrock. Most of the local Adelaidean strata penetrated, which are marine siltstones with minor variable carbonate and carbon content, have been shown to contain anomalous lead and zinc, but the narrow concentrations of ore-grade mineralisation seen at the surface and present in a minor way at depth in some drill cores (best core assay 50 feet @ 2.1% Pb and 2.0 % Zn in DDH EU4) are envisaged to be structurally controlled. All of the significant base metal mineralisation so far encountered downhole is secondary, vein form lead-silver-zinc sulphides with a quartz-calcite gangue, probably originating from acid volcanic sedimentary intercalations, wherein the entrained base metals, in tiny grains of pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite, have later become hydrothermally remobilised into flat-pitching tensional openings in the country rocks that were caused by incipient nappe or overthrust movement.
