An area near Coffin Bay was taken up to search for exposures of surficial sedimentary material which might be useful to BHP for preparing flux additives to incorporate in the charges of its Whyalla blast furnaces or basic oxygen steelmaking plant reaction vessels. Channel samples of clay derived from weathering of shallow basement were taken from the main tramway cuttings and assayed for major oxides and alkalis. Some samples assayed as high as 29.8% Al2O3, but in general the quality appeared to be patchy and nothing was located which would warrant further work. Samples of calcareous aeolianite were subjected to drop testing, but they produced a large proportion of fines and so would be physically unsuitable to use as furnace charge.
