Continuing exploration for Ediacara - type, Early Palaeozoic carbonate sediment-hosted lead-zinc deposits in the Bunyeroo Gorge - Parachilna Gorge area of the Flinders Ranges comprised regional and detailed stream sediment, rock chip and soil geochemical sampling, plus the conduct of numerous IP surveys and a ground magnetic survey, magnetic basement depth studies, outcrop and drill core sample petrographic and mineragraphic determinations, and appraisal diamond drilling of a few inferred highly mineralised prospects (5 inclined holes, total penetration 2505 feet). This work has revealed significant but sub-economic amounts of lead-zinc mineralisation in dolomitic rocks of the basal Lower Cambrian Wilkawillina Limestone. In addition, distinctive gossan-like weathered zone developments have been delineated in the same general stratigraphic zone, which are often geochemically quite anomalous for lead and zinc. Microscopic study of cores obtained by diamond drilling on these features has revealed them to be false gossans, consisting of transported manganese and iron hydroxides forming pseudo-boxwork structures built over recrystallised calcite euhedra.
