Exploration for possible stratiform massive base metal sulphide deposits in the area of the historic Yudnamutana Mining Field, located 12 km north-west of Mount Painter, was designed to follow up promising copper geochemical anomalies and related percussion drillhole indications of mineralisation found by previous SA Department of Mines work, conducted during the late 1960s as part of their regional geological investigations. Utah's activities have focussed on the exposed Willouran age metasediments of the Yerelina Valley, where limited geological mapping at 1:5000 scale, prospect grid surveying, detailed soil and rock chip sampling traverses (5227 samples), costeaning of abandoned mine workings (1000 linear feet), mine adit underground mapping and channel sampling at the Pinnacles mine, and rotary percussion drilling of selected geochemical anomalies in the Wywyana Formation between the Cockscomb and Black Queen East mines (4 holes, total 2010 feet) have given encouragement for finding significant copper mineralisation within the Callanna Group stratigraphic sequence. An intensified drilling campaign is now planned, to further test targets in this area.
