In a search for possible north-westwards thickening, basinwards extensions to some thin Cretaceous coal seams which had been reported from the 1914 drilling of an artesian water bore on Finniss Springs Station, Endeavour Oil drilled 2 vertical rotary mud open exploratory holes with a combined total penetration of 122 m on the subject licence during March 1976. Both holes, which were terminated in Precambrian metasedimentary basement, failed to encounter any coal in the cover sequence. Downhole geophysical logs were run in the first and deepest (99 m) hole which was spudded on a mesa top 3.6 km south of Horse Springs. The second hole, which was located ~25 km to the south-southeast near the southern licence boundary, entered basement at only 4.5 m depth. 1378 square km or ~65% of the originally granted licence area has been relinquished due to its now perceived diminished prospectivity for coal.
