Three exploratory vertical rotary mud holes totalling 203 m were drilled on the southern margin of the Mesozoic Great Artesian Basin, to the north-west of Finniss Springs Station, to search for possible thicker, basinward extensions of a thin coal seam intersection reported in the drilling records of a 1914 water bore. All of the new drillholes passed through <75 m thickness of Mesozoic sediments to reach Precambrian bedrock, but failed to encounter any coal.
