Geological reconnaissance mapping, plus soil, stream sediment and rock chip geochemical sampling, and limited ground magnetic surveys over several mined prospects in the Western River area of Kangaroo Island, failed to disclose indications of an anticipated, possibly volcanic - metasedimentary, Kuroko or Mount Isa style stratiform Pb-Zn(-Cu) ore depositional environment within the target thinly vein-mineralised Early Cambrian phyllite / metasiltstone unit. Only sparse sphalerite and minor pyrite were seen lying both in cross-cutting fractures and concordant foliation planes within stored diamond drill core samples of carbonaceous fine-grained metasediments (?Talisker Calc-siltstone) taken from the Dewrang prospect. The source of a lead and zinc soil anomaly overlying the old Perserverance and Bonaventura mine workings was not determined, but is probably due to metallic ore wastes remobilised out of these workings.
