Following a geological survey of the area held under Special Mining Lease 58 by Industrial Rock Mines Pty Ltd in the Mount Fitton area, a detailed reconnaissance of all mineralisation was undertaken by two company prospectors during the period March 1964 to December 1965. The whole of the target dolomite host rock outcrop was covered at 50 foot traverse intervals and all showings of talc and other minerals were recorded. Some 15 talc prospects which warranted further investigation were located; one had been worked to a small degree in the past, but all the rest were untouched. Numerous deposits of crystalline magnesite were also found, that warrant additional exploratory work. Showings of manganese oxides, and small showings of copper, lead and zinc, tremolite asbestos, ochre and turquoise are not regarded as likely to be of economic significance. The tremolite asbestos occurs on the western side of the dolomite area, but owing to its short and brittle fibres it is not a commercial proposition. To begin to appraise the better grade talc occurrences, 18,000 feet of shallow percussion drilling was performed in early 1967. Trenching by bulldozer was carried out on the No. 24 prospect, which has led to a decision to commence mining talc there at an early date. Other trenching done at the No. 22 prospect yielded inconclusive results.
