An assessment has been made of the No. 24 talc prospect, which was discovered in 1964 and is located about 5 miles south-east of the principal No. 5 deposit and the mine camp. The prospect lies within the main dolomite mass, not far from its top, a position seemingly favoured by most of the Mount Fitton talc deposits. It consists of a 200 foot long lens of grey translucent talc with dolomitic bands. The strike is about 70 degrees, parallel to the direction of the larger shear zones and faults in the area. The estimated average thickness is of the order of 7 to 8 feet, including the dolomite interlayers. Two trenches have been cut across the near vertical lens at right-angles to its strike: one near the topographic high point, and the other downslope and 40 feet to the west. However, neither trench penetrated below the influence of weathering and slope soil creep. Most observed talc layers are between 1 and 3 feet thick, and about half of them are classed as high grade talc, which is borne out by the results of 2 samples taken randomly in the trenches. Both the alumina and iron oxide contents are low. The deposit contains an estimated 60 tons of high grade talc per vertical foot. By opening the lens up to mining from the gully below, a face of some 40 feet could be developed without moving much country rock, apart from that contained in the lens itself. The No. 24 prospect is thus regarded as a potential small producer of high grade talc.
