As part of a search for possible buried economic Olympic Dam type IOCG-U deposits in volcanic basement, or for stratiform Athabasca Basin type uranium occurrences in the overlying cover, farminee Marathon Resources carried out detailed calcrete geochemical sampling over part of the regional Scorpion Bore gravity high, conducted a single 2.2 km long line of test AMT electromagnetic surveying (that was tied in to an existing 504 m deep vertical percussion drillhole, SB1, which had been completed by the company in early June 2003 on this gravity anomaly), and drilled one deep inclined RC/diamond corehole to investigate a geochemical target lying within the now relinquished area. The initial calcrete sampling was infilled to 200 m x 200 m spacing over interpreted radiometric and IOCG pathfinder element anomalies, and at one of these sites the HQ3/NQ diamond cored drillhole was put in to TD 403.9 m (including 123 m of RC precollar). This hole stayed within Gawler Range Volcanics felsic tuffs, dacites and rhyodacites for its entire depth. No significant mineralisation was seen, either while logging the drill core or inspecting the downhole sample assay results.
