Exploration carried out primarily for possible economic uranium mineralisation within an area located approximately 40 km north-northeast of Port Lincoln started with reconnaissance aircore drilling during May 2007 (29 vertical holes for 590 m) to determine bedrock depths and lithologies and to obtain bottomhole and cover samples for geochemical analysis. The initial primary targets for the latter were transported regolith sediments which may have been involved in palaeochannel uranium deposition or in roll-front type uranium deposition. The possibility of finding primary uranium mineralisation similar to the Hospital deposit near Port Lincoln was also entertained. Bottomhole samples from several of the drillholes returned elevated uranium values, to a maximum of 23 ppm U, some being associated with traces of chloritic alteration and haematisation in the bedrock. No further field work was performed during licence years 2 and 3. Planned follow-up calcrete sampling, ground radiometric surveying and rotary mud drilling did not eventuate before a decision was made to allow licence tenure to lapse.
