Copper Range's interest in the Adelaide Fold Belt is predominantly focussed on exploration for copper, as near-surface oxide deposits and sediment-hosted stratiform sulphide mineralisation. However, EL 3646 covering an area adjacent to the south-west side of Wilpena Pound National Park was originally applied for to cover a uranium-channel radiometric anomaly that was apparent on the State GIS database. The anomaly occurs in the vicinity of the stratigraphic boundary between the Bonney Sandstone and shale of the Wonoka Formation. It is possible that uranium was precipitated from oxidised fluids on contact with reducing rocks. The subject licence covers this anomalous zone, and several sites of old copper workings, as well as a large portion of the Arkaba Diapir. A barite occurrence in the north of the tenement was investigated earlier by Copper Range and found to be a significant occurrence. Holowilena Ironstone outcrops in the south of the tenement have also been the subject of recent field investigations, with a view to evaluating their iron ore potential. Recently the licensee conducted a further brief follow-up of areas of Holowilena Ironstone that had been previously sampled. The currently relinquished portion of the licence is thought to have low prospectivity for finding economic amounts of iron ore mineralisation.
