EL 3972 - Apoinga occurs within the northern Mount Lofty Ranges, where the exposed bedrock comprises Neoproterozoic rocks of the Adelaide Fold Belt. The main feature of interest to Copper Range within its licence area is the Tarnma Anticline, which is a N-S trending fold that is cored by Skillogalee Dolomite. This structure represents an unbreached anticline (where inferred salt diapirism has not penetrated through to the surface) occurring in a favourable regional structural setting, as it lies midway between the historic major copper mining centres of Burra to the north and Kapunda to the south. Copper Range has developed a new exploration model for recognising vectors to sediment-hosted copper mineralisation within the Adelaide Fold Belt, which targets areas where a reductant-bearing fluid has been ponded against a suitable structural or stratigraphic trap, and then an influx of copper-bearing fluid precipitates copper sulphides in a porous sandstone horizon. An unbreached anticline, such as at Tarnma, provides a suitable target of this kind because any fluid flow-through of saline brines would have been significantly retarded, and fluid escaping from compacting sediments may have been focused into the core of these structures, with only slow leakage along minor fracture zones. Such a scenario would allow fluids to pond within structural and stratigraphic traps, and enable the collection of several pulses of fluid expulsion, thereby increasing the availability of reductant and also the length of exposure to subsequently introduced copper-bearing fluid, as it is prevented from flowing out of the system. During the reporting period Copper Range undertook reconnaissance visits to the Tarnma Anticline, collecting rock chip samples for assaying which produced some elevated copper values that provided encouragement for further work. A consultant's detailed geological appraisal of the Tarnma Anticline was completed during 2009. This appraisal identified the Tarnma Anticline as a prospective location for finding sandstone-hosted copper mineralisation below a dolomite seal. A programme of intensive surface and subsurface geochemical sampling of the Skillogalee Dolomite and accompanying mapping was recommended, particularly within the anticline's core where the dolomite is cut by NE-trending structures. The western licence portion now being relinquished is considered to have low potential for the discovery of significant mineralisation.
