As part of a planned project to rehabilitate the disused, government-owned Mount Torrens gold treatment plant, expert research was commissioned by SADME into selection of a suitable extraction process to remove remnant gold credits from accumulated stamp battery and cyanide leaching plant tailings, as a means of offsetting the cost of removing the tailings to a treatment site located outside of the Adelaide metropolitan water supply catchment area. The design and costing of a suitable treatment plant was also part of the subject brief. The various processing routes trialled for retreating the ~26,000 tonnes of tailings stockpiles all indicated a likely project loss. It was estimated that agglomeration heap leaching could be carried out at a reduced cost compared with using the carbon-in-pulp process, but so doing would probably decrease the gold recovery.
