Close examination of large scale apparent folds in the vicinity of Wheal Ellen has led to the conclusion that apparent folds can be produced by a combination of jointing (shearing) and topography. Thus, apart from fault trace offsets, no importance is given to these features. From statistical analysis of a limited collection of structural data, there appears to have been external rotation and tilting to the south-west of the idealised principal strain elements of the regional stress system. Therefore, tensional and release planes existing adjacent to the western side of fault planes may logically be expected to form the loci of ore deposition. Crumpled strata present on the west side of shears could also hold economic mineralisation if they are conjugate features. If so, they will plunge steeply in a south-easterly direction. Quartz reefs occur in close association with the main shear systems of the area. Where these reefs exhibit geophysical anomalies with a pronounced axial shape and preferred direction it is probable that a shear with accompanying mineralisation lies to the immediate east. The orientation of this shear is predictable.
