Investigation of some isolated coarse-grained jaspilite outcrops and likely intervening subcrop, in an area 12 miles west of Iron Baron near the Middleback Range, sought to identify a currently economic iron ore resource of more than 60 Mt existing close to the surface and grading at least 25% total Fe. Initial work consisted of reading ground magnetic survey traverses over the associated regional aeromagnetic anomaly, trying to establish continuity of the jaspilite bed between outcrops, and trying to estimate its depth extent. The outcropping jaspilite unit, consisting of haematite with subordinate magnetite, had earlier been tested by BHP and was found to be suitable for beneficiation, with a composition containing between 1.1 and 16.8% magnetite by volume. Subsequently, 2 exploratory percussion drillholes totalling 438 feet were put down to test the grade and subsurface depth extent of the folded, steeply eastwards-dipping iron formation beds outcropping at Stony Hill. These drillholes showed that the strongly metamorphosed buried iron formation, which grades an average 30.2% Fe and is fairly low in magnetite content, continues downwards directly below the hill's summit only as far as a depth of 125 feet, with the underlying core of the hill being formed of weathered limonitised schist. Therefore it was concluded that a mineable tonnage of iron ore does not occur at this formerly judged promising locality, and so is also probably not present under adjacent similar jaspilite-capped hills.
