The possible areal extent and potential in-ground resources of secondary kaolin developed from deep lateritic weathering of Early Proterozoic basement rocks on central-eastern Eyre Peninsula were investigated by the licensee, with a view to obtaining possible raw material for economic alumina production. During July 1968, the company carried out 1:20,000 scale geological mapping of the outcropping kaolin occurrences, which were thought to arise from the sustained action of meteoric waters in breaking down feldspar constituents in the saprolite, where this horizon had later been exposed by uplift and erosion. Next, over the period November 1968-January 1969, Pechiney drilled 107 exploratory percussion holes with a total penetration of 1568 m to appraise six prospects where substantial thicknesses of kaolinite-altered formations appeared to exist. Following microscopic inspection of the drill cuttings, selected cuttings samples were submitted for assaying of their acid-soluble alumina content, but reliable and repeatable assay results proved very difficult to obtain, particularly for composited sample intervals, so the average grade values are mostly highly inconclusive, but would appear to be generally uneconomic. The largest volumes of clean kaolin material are present at Kelly Tank and Bunora, and some tentative resource calculations were attempted which arrived at a combined figure of several tens of millions of tons of kaolin grading at just over 20% average soluble alumina content. A suggested programme of continuing exploration was advanced, primarily consisting of infill grid drilling down to 100 m centres at Kelly Tank and Bunora, plus new mapping and test drilling of a nearby kaolin occurrence at Carpie Puntha Hill. Mining project feasibility considerations re. available infrastructure and likely product handling costs were also presented.
