Exploration for possible buried epithermal or hydrothermal gold deposits within the large variety of Archaean, Palaeoproterozoic and Mesoproterozoic basement rocks present in an area located 20 km east of Tarcoola has targeted the potential of a series of prominent north-west - trending linear demagnetised zones, representing probable shear discontinuities which are aligned with known gold-bearing quartz-filled mylonite zones and quartz veins mined at the historic Company Well and Lake Labyrinth Goldfields. Work conducted on the recently relinquished part of the tenement has consisted of calcrete sampling, the conduct of two ground gravity surveys, air-core traverse drilling, drillhole rehabilitation, geological field reconnaissance, and rock chip sampling. 34 calcrete samples were collected in April 2004 on 200 m x 200 m spaced centres, from the north- western part of the Lake Labyrinth shear zone. The aim of the sampling was to infill previous broad spaced calcrete sampling done by MIM that had returned low level results, but results which in a spatial sense appeared geologically interesting to Range River Gold. However, no anomalous gold assay results (> 0.01 g/t Au) were returned. Gravity observations made previously on the area of EL 3698 are scarce, and restricted to isolated 4 km x 1 km spaced stations. In August 2005, new joint venturer Minotaur Exploration contracted Haines Surveys to undertake a gravity survey consisting of 2 km x 1 km and 1 km x 1 km spaced stations. Another gravity survey was undertaken in June-July 2006, which was designed to infill selected areas of interest identified the year before: this gravity data was primarily acquired at a station spacing of 500 m x 500 m. The combined data now being made public (20 plus 22 stations) defined a regional gravity low present within the recently relinquished portion of the licence, that is interpreted as probably being due to a concealed Hiltaba Suite granite pluton. A shallow aircore drilling programme was performed during 2005 by Minotaur, with 5 holes being situated within the recently relinquished ground. Drillhole TA05A017 recorded highly anomalous lanthanum plus associated elevated uranium values of about ~20-30 ppm U. A field trip to Lake Labyrinth was undertaken in November 2006, to examine basement rock exposures mapped near a positive regional gravity anomaly. The outcrops observed include Archaean felsic leucogneiss and Palaeoproterozoic foliated granite. The nature of the source for this gravity anomaly therefore remains unknown, but it is expected to lie at considerable depth. Some rock chip sampling of the basement outcrops was done for trace element assaying, but no noteworthy anomalies were returned.
