Exploration for Mississippi Valley - style Cu-Zn-Pb orebodies in the vicinity of the old Sliding Rock Mine, 15 miles east of Beltana, comprised detailed geological mapping, grid-based soil and outcrop sampling, interpretation of previous Electrolytic Zinc Co. stream sediment sampling results, VLF EM profiling of selected geochemical anomalies, and shallow air drilling (6 holes, total 765 feet) on possible buried extensions to the Sliding Rock copper lode and on potential lead-zinc orebodies in the Black Range Springs area to the east along Warraweena Creek. A significant north-eastern extension to the Sliding Rock lode was intersected by drillhole PDSL 3, which encountered Cambrian Parachilna Formation mudstones assaying 0.42% Cu over 40 feet, with best values 0.82% Cu over 10 feet. Further drilling attempted in the mine area after the completion of this hole was hindered by excessive groundwater, unsuitable drilling equipment and a lack of drilling supplies. Additional core drilling using rotary methods is recommended, but the likelihood of finding ore grades of economic interest is considered remote. The inferred lead-zinc potential of the Black Range Springs area has not been altered by limited recent drilling, but it now appears that a locally high manganese concentration within the Ajax Limestone may be scavenging zinc and creating false geochemical anomalies. However, a cause for the related geophysical anomalies has not been adequately explained either. Further diamond drilling of both geochemical and geophysical targets here is also warranted.
