A group of exploration licences located on the eastern margin of the Eucla Basin, that cover ground a short distance north of Ceduna, are being explored for economic Tertiary heavy mineral sands (HM) marine placer deposits by Iluka Resources. One licence, EL 4409, which is the most north-western member of this particular tenement group (designated as Group 2 for amalgamated licence expenditure reporting), covers the so-called ‘Bay of Plenty’ palaeogeographic feature, which hosts the recently identified HM anomalous Mojave and Kalahari prospects. This licence is being retained in full by Iluka to allow for further exploration. The presently relinquished tenement ground comprises: A) a north-eastern portion covering parts of ELs 4424 and 4545, which Iluka considers has now been explored sufficiently for both HM and uranium, and which it regards as non-prospective; B) a southern portion covering parts of ELs 3746, 3811 and 4546, which has been extensively explored and is believed to be devoid of marine hosts sands. Work undertaken by Iluka upon this ground during the subject period has consisted of regional reconnaissance exploratory aircore drilling down to a minimum traverse separation of 1 km and minimum hole spacing along traverses of 50 m. In total 446 vertical drillholes were completed for an aggregate penetration of 13,357 m, and from a number of these holes a total of 707 drill cuttings samples were submitted for heavy mineral analysis. The best mineralised, significant (> 1% HM content) strandline intercepts were obtained from drillhole YE1449, with 1.5 m thickness grading at 5.5% HM, and from drillhole YE1661, containing 1.5 m @ 4.07% HM within an 18 m thick interval of significant HM rich sand stringers intersected below 13.5 m depth.
