A group of exploration licences located on the eastern margin of the Eucla Basin, at a short distance east and south-east of Ceduna, are being explored for economic Tertiary heavy mineral sands (HM) marine placer deposits by Iluka Resources. The belated discovery during March 2011 of a HM anomaly situated within the western section of the subject Group 3 tenement area (designated as such for amalgamated licence expenditure reporting), has now made it necessary for Iluka to re-investigate this ground for its subtle HM potential. Most of the company's previous licence relinquishments came from this western section. The so-called Namib prospect remnant HM occurrence is situated near the delta of the Narlaby Palaeochannel, and has been largely eroded. Only its northern portion (extending for ~1 km along strike) has been preserved due to the slightly elevated crystalline basement. The eastern part of the Group 3 ground is also considered to be highly prospective for finding uranium roll-front mineralisation in the Narlaby Palaeochannel, and therefore is being retained in full by Iluka. The presently relinquished tenement ground comprises: A) well-explored and interpreted blocks from the western section, which cover small areas clearly shown to be devoid of marine coastal sands (that were probably eroded/reworked). B) the western half of EL 4295, which had been drilled by previous explorers and is understood to have been subjected to erosion. Work undertaken by Iluka upon this ground during the subject period has consisted of regional reconnaissance exploratory aircore drilling, carried out generally at a 400 m hole spacing along roadside traverses. In total 44 vertical drillholes were completed for an aggregate penetration of 1465 m, and from a number of these holes a total of 155 drill cuttings samples were submitted for heavy mineral analysis. The assay results confirmed that no significant (> 1%) HM intercepts had been made by the drilling.
