Exploration for possible economic heavy mineral sands carried out by Iluka Resources within the now relinquished portions of its multi-licence acreage has comprised vertical aircore drilling of the Cainozoic sedimentary sequence (166 holes for a total penetration of 5133.2 m, put down along reconnaissance traverses spaced about 1 km apart, with a nominal 400 m between adjacent drillholes), plus heavy mineral sampling of selected drillholes (318 samples). The best significant (>1%) heavy mineral intercepts that were made on ground now being relinquished came from drilliing done only two of the nine licences: hole EP838 on EL 3163 yielded up to 2.1% HM from the depth interval 34.5-36 m, and hole EP481 on EL 3201 yielded up to 1.9% HM from the depth interval 22.5-24 m. In addition, during December 2005 Iluka Resources flew a 25Hz, frequency domain helicopter-borne HoisTEM survey, at 2 km E-W flight line spacing and 35 m mean terrain clearance, aiming to detect near-surface aquifers containing groundwater that could possibly be used as process water for the planned Jacinth heavy mineral processing plant.
