In a study made of the Palaeozoic magmatic province underlying the Murray Basin, all available geophysical, geological and geochemical data was evaluated by Shell's technical consultants, who identified six conceptual targets which could reasonably be expected to host significant deposits of metallic mineralisation formed within igneous intrusions and surrounding younger metasediments. EL 2487 was considered to represent a more exhumed and marginal basement terrane that has lower prospectivity than the less deformed and altered basement lying deeper within the province. Late in 2001, re-sampling of the Sedan coal deposit was undertaken to assess its suitability for undergoing coal conversion to provide a feedstock for use in newly advanced gas-to-liquids fuel generation technology. It was found that the planned project would be viable under particular market conditions, most of which remained uncertain at that time because of fluctuating, often adverse external factors. A single rotary mud precollared vertical diamond drillhole, MLE2, was completed in mid-February 2002 by GTLE Energy Ltd to a total depth of 76.5 m, and was partly cored from 45.2 m depth. The hole's intent was to obtain check samples of Sedan lignite to undergo metallurgical tests of coal ash content and for confirming CSR's reported seam thickness and geology. A close match was obtained to CSR's 1984 predictions made from its composite sampling of Plies WS2, 4 and 6.
