Exploration for possible diamondiferous kimberlites in an area located immediately north-west and west of Woomera was undertaken to follow up promising reports of numerous kimberlitic indicator minerals detected by CRA Exploration in previous work performed during the early 1990s. Orogenic Exploration collected 29 surface loam and stream sediment bulk samples totalling 805 kg during the second licence year, to submit for heavy liquid separation of heavy minerals and their subsequent laboratory mineralogical study. A large number of unweathered chromite grains, plus some picroilmenite and pink (non-pyrope) spinels, were identified and subjected to electron microprobe characterisation and LA-ICPMS trace element determinations that supported their kimberlite rock geochemical affinities. Importantly, one small (~0.5 mm), pale greenish dodecahedral diamond weighing 0.0015 carats was discovered in a stream sediment sample taken from a tributary of Munganippie Creek, which complemented CRA's earlier discovery of two similar diamonds in the general vicinity. Attempts made by the licensee after 2005 to re-enter the operationally sensitive Woomera Instrumented Range area, wherein lie the diamond discovery sites near Munganippie Creek, was frustrated by Commonwealth Department of Defence requirements regarding the protection of known and suspected aboriginal heritage sites along this creek, and later on by continual priority military use bans that this department imposed due to its changed land access policy. Therefore additional sampling for kimberlite indicators, and planned geophysical and geochemical surveys aimed at locating a possible shallow kimberlite intrusion, did not eventuate before a decision was made to abandon tenure of the subject mineral exploration licence. During the period April 2007 - December 2008, Orogenic Exploration was in a joint venture on EL 3553 with farminee Venture Minerals, who was exploring for possible economic Olympic Dam or Prominent Hill type buried IOCG deposits as part of its multi-licence Churchill Dam Project. The target Churchill Dam regional gravity anomaly was thought to represent a Mesoproterozoic volcanic caldera structure, similar to that inferred as the original host setting of the Olympic Dam deposit. To further define this large feature, Venture Minerals acquired semi-detailed gravity coverage on a 400 m x 400 m grid across the southern part of EL 3553 during June-July 2007 (325 stations read), as part of a larger, 1831 station gravity survey covering the entire regional anomaly. After the new gravity data had been modelled and correlated with available magnetic data to delineate coincident anomalies that might warrant drilling, the company made plans to run another gravity survey across the north-eastern corner of the licence area to finalise the drilling target selection, but this survey programme was aborted and the JV terminated when timely access for exploration was denied for the reasons given above.
