Two areas located respectively immediately to the south-west and the north-west of Coober Pedy, and lying in the northern part of the Gawler Craton near the southern margin of the Mabel Creek Ridge crustal element and to the north of the east-trending Karari Fault Zone, have been explored for possible economic epithermal/hydrothermal IOCG mineralisation. Part of a multi-licence airborne magnetic and radiometric survey, totalling 1882 line km over EL 4722, was flown for Teck by contractor Aeroquest Airborne during May-June 2011, with a north-south line spacing of 200 m. The resulting data provided improved resolution of magnetic features and structural trends. A distinctive ‘star-shaped’ magnetic anomaly in the north-western corner of the licence area, peaking at 1670 nT, was interpreted to possibly represent magnetite alteration localised by north-west and north-east trending faults. A gravity high lies immediately south of this anomaly. Work area native heritage clearance surveys were next undertaken over large parts of both subject ELs, in places where Teck proposed to undertake infill ground gravity surveying plus surface geochemical sampling and trial IP profiling. However, the desired clearances could not be obtained, and in consequence both of the licenses were surrendered.
