A group of exploration licences located on the northern margin of the Eucla Basin, and situated north of the Trans Australian Railway, which cover ground extending into the Eocene to Miocene marginal marine depositional hinterland behind the Barton and Ooldea palaeocoastal sand ranges, are being or have recently been explored for economic Tertiary heavy mineral sands (HM) marine placer deposits by Iluka Resources. Historically, the entire ~27,000 square km area lately occupied by the Group 4 tenements had been little explored for minerals. As part of Iluka's HM exploration strategy, all interpreted major stratigraphic / palaeogeomorphic target zones lying therein have been investigated by regional reconnaissance exploratory drilling. To date, a total of 1114 aircore holes with a total penetration of 51,019 m have been drilled. As part of its Amalgamated (exploration) Expenditure Agreement with PIRSA/DMITRE, Iluka was required to relinquish 10% by area of its Group 4 tenement holdings as of end July 2011. The subject joint licence report relates to activities conducted in those relinquished/surrendered parts of the company's acreage. 162 aircore holes totalling 7065 m were completed within these parts, and an unusually low count of 253 drill cuttings samples, visually estimated in the field as containing HM of interest, were sent off for laboratory analysis. Only 14 samples yielded significant (>1% HM) grain assemblages, the best results being 3.65% HM from hole MAR 543 drilled on EL 4327, and 3.25% HM from hole MAR 640 drilled on EL 4347. Iluka's recent drilling results within the now surrendered ground show clearly that most of the central and north-western parts of its Group 4 acreage are devoid of marine host sands, while in the few places where these exist, they are severely reworked. The as yet unexplored Ooldea Range sector of the Group 4 tenement holding will presently be retained, although previously, other explorers of this particular area did not encounter any high-grade HM deposits.
