Exploration undertaken by Western Mining Corp. in a search for possible economic Mount Gunson - type stratiform copper mineralisation that could have formed within a sequence of buried Adelaidean metasediments of the eastern Stuart Shelf which in part subcrop on EL 293, initially comprised ground geophysical surveys aimed at delineating some interpreted regional magnetic and gravity anomalies situated over central Lake Torrens near Murdie Island. 350 line km of ground magnetic and gravity traverses were acquired during February-May 1978, after commencement of the work had been delayed by the process of obtaining balloon-tyred, lightweight 3-wheeled motorcycles suitable for safely accessing the soft surface of the salt lake. Interpretation of the survey results indicated a depth to the magnetic anomaly source of 500-1000 m, and 1.8 km depth to the gravity anomaly source (using a density contrast of 0.3 g/cc). No further field work was programmed for EL 293 until the regional geology is better understood by WMC out of ongoing exploration occurring on its adjacent tenements.
