Exploration of the buried Palaeoproterozoic basement rocks of the north-eastern Mabel Creek High for possible economic IOCG type mineral deposits has targeted geophysical features that the Anglo American - Goldstream Mining joint venture considered to be prospective. Initial work entailed the collection and assaying of 3 orientation soil samples as part of a larger geochemical survey over the Cadi prospect which lies on the JV's adjoining Warrina South EL 2883. No anomalous values were returned. Following a review of the available regional gravity data, Anglo American acquired an additional gravity survey early in 2003 to augment the existing 5 station coverage on the north of EL 2882 and allow better definition of basement structures. 449 stations were read on a 400 m x 800 m grid covering all of the northern part of the subject licence, and another 57 gravity stations were read at 100 m intervals along two detailed profile lines laid out across the WN2 and WN5 prospects lying to the south and south-east respectively. Evaluation of the new regional gravity data allowed Anglo American to downgrade the exploration potential of the northern 140 square km of EL 2882, which was relinquished from tenure on 13/5/2003. Two lines of ground magnetic survey totalling 3.7 line km were later acquired to allow 2D geophysical modelling of the WN2 and WN5 gravity anomalies. Depth to basement estimates made from the latter magnetic data indicated that the basement lies at great depth, and further assessment of the prospects' gravity anomalies determined that they are of insufficient magnitude to denote the presence of significant IOCG mineralisation. A petrological examination of drill collar residue cuttings garnered from Goldstream's previously completed RC drillholes in the Warrina North area indicated the presence of a series of mafic gneisses, with some low temperature alteration present in the rocks of hole PD99WN011 which is similar to that observed in SCH01 in the Warrina South tenement. This alteration was considered to be late stage, and unrelated to the 1590 Ma IOCG mineralising event observed at Olympic Dam. The realisation that potential IOCG targets would lie under substantial thicknesses of cover, and might not be of an economic size, led Anglo American to elect to withdraw from the joint venture agreement on 11/2/2004. After Goldstream Mining resumed operatorship of EL 2882, it commissioned a consultant's review of all of the gravity data and interpreted basement geology, which generated five new IOCG geophysical targets which presently remain the focus of ongoing assessment as to their depths and geometry. No further field work took place on the licence, due to the heavy exploration commitments faced by the company elsewhere on its Mount Woods Project tenements.
