An area centred approximately 60 km north-west of Yunta was taken up to explore for possible economic, high grade haematite mineralisation suitable for sale as direct shipping iron ore. Past SA Government regional mapping of the Nackara Arc metasediments during 1964 had identified small rich (~64% Fe) occurrences of such mineralisation within the Holowilena Ironstone near Red Hill and some 20 km to the west at Kaditcha Rock, localities that straddle the subject licence area. A field reconnaissance and geological mapping of prospective rock sequences within the Holowilena Ironstone near Carrick Hill showed that outcrop is scant, with most of the target sequence being buried under shallow alluvial cover. 3 rock chip samples were collected from the Red Hill mineral occurrence, and 1 from the Kaditcha Rock occurrence, to check the previously reported grades. Inspection of the ironstone beds at all three localities revealed that the outcrops are discontinuous, thin, brecciated and re-cemented, appearing to be somewhat nodular, with clasts that exhibit a dull to shiny lustre and slickensided fabric. These haematite-bearing units are interpreted to represent a partially replaced lithology, the physical composition of which has been repeatedly re-activitated by rock movements adjacent to flexure slip zones of weakness. Based on the replacement style of the original rock type and the visible strong silification, it was considered that the iron-rich units would be difficult to drill, and the chances of encountering down-dip extensions are unlikely. No further work was recommended for the licence area, mainly because of the narrow widths and discontinuous strike of haematite outcrop.
