Extraction of sand from the Kalbeeba Sand Pit, located ~4 km SE of Gawler, occurred from the early 1950s to the mid 1990s and significantly disturbed some 35 ha of rural land. Historic mining methodology had given little consideration to the physical or environmental impacts on the landscape. In 2005 the operating company, Boral Resources (SA) Pty Ltd, engaged geotechnical specialists URS Australia Pty Ltd to design and certify a solution for the final rehabilitation of the tenements. The project was completed on 30 June 2012 on time and within budget to the satisfaction of all stakeholders. Final rehabilitation of two highly disturbed extractive mine areas has reduced the visual impact of mining, returned the land back to productive agricultural pursuits and re-established indigenous native vegetation to further enhance the remnant vegetation contained within the rural environment.
