Three entire exploration licence areas centred approximately 150 km north of Maralinga have been surrendered by Iluka Resources because they are now deemed unprospective for heavy mineral marine placer deposits. These areas lie on the interpreted landward side of the 'Barton Scarp' geomorphic feature, and are thought to contain only non-marine sediments deposited during the Eocene period of stratigraphic interest, that probably represent reworked sediments of the Cambrian Officer Basin succession. During their tenure period, the subject tenements were explored for any Tertiary palaeocoastal heavy mineral trap sites inferred to have formed in the central-northern portion of the Barton Range shoreline trend as embayments between now shallowly concealed basement highs. The only field work undertaken was the drilling during July 2010 of 30 exploratory aircore holes for a total penetration of 1219 m, all located along 4 traverses on the former EL 4330 at the western end of the surrendered ground. No significant heavy mineral intercepts were made, the maximum grade encountered being 0.34% HM in hole MAR0429. Other exploratory drilling carrried out by Iluka immediately to the south of the now surrendered ELs 4594 and 4595 on adjacent still retained Group 4 tenement ground also failed to reveal any strandline sands or anomalous heavy mineral concentrations.
