Teck Australia has been the successful recipient of a grant of subsidy funds under Year 1 of the SA Government's PACE 2020 Targeting initiative, to conduct strategic geophysical exploration in the northern part of the Gawler Craton near the southern margin of the Mabel Creek Ridge crustal element and to the north of the east-trending Karari Fault Zone, where the company has taken up nine exploration tenements forming its Coober Pedy Project, to explore for possible economic buried epithermal/hydrothermal IOCG mineralisation in concealed Proterozoic basement. The proposed gravity data acquisition was supported by the government because gravity surveying is considered to be a very effective technique for better defining geophysical responses associated with accumulations of dense iron oxides. During July-August 2011, contractor Atlas Geophysics undertook a ground gravity survey on selected parts of the project licences, to infill existing publicly available gravity data. Parts of the project area were declared ‘off-limits’ to exploration when subjected to inspections for gaining Aboriginal heritage work area clearances, and the scope of the gravity survey was scaled back accordingly. A total of 707 stations were read on a variety of survey line grids including 1 km x 1 km, 1 km x 500 m, 500 m x 500 m, and 1 km x 250 m. The aim of doing the survey was to improve gravity data resolution in certain areas so that any dense iron-oxide bodies that may be present in the basement could be identified. The quality of the infill gravity data so obtained is good, and the new data has produced a modest improvement in the resolution of gravity features in the areas surveyed. As an example, the large gravity high on the eastern side of EL 4489 originally had poor station coverage, but the new data has revealed a ‘ridge’ of elevated gravity response on the southern side of an ENE-trending fault (?splay off the Karari Fault Zone). Southern Geoscience Consultants and Adelaide Mining Geophysics were later contracted by Teck to stitch the company's newly acquired PACE 2020 gravity data into regional Government and company open file datasets. The combined datasets were next processed and run through a 3D inversion using UBC software to generate geophysical models that Teck hopes will be useful for in-house targeting purposes.
