A now relinquished licence portion located 40 km to the west of Coober Pedy, which lies in the northern part of the Gawler Craton near the southern margin of the Mabel Creek Ridge crustal element and to the north of the east-trending Karari Fault Zone, has been explored for possible buried economic epithermal/hydrothermal IOCG mineralisation. Following the conduct of three-dimensional inversion modelling of available regional geophysical data, part of a multi-licence detailed airborne magnetic and radiometric survey was flown over EL 4489 for Teck by contractor Aeroquest Airborne during May-June 2011, with a north-south line spacing of 200 m. The resulting data provided improved resolution of magnetic features and structural trends. However, the magnetic signature within the now relinquished portion of the license that was revealed by 247 line km of the survey coverage is relatively quiet, indicating that the basement and cover sequence do not contain significant amounts of magnetic minerals (typically magnetite). Because of this apparent rock deficiency, Teck decided that this piece of ground lacked encouragement for finding the targeted buried IOCG mineralisation.
