Two now relinquished licence sub-portions centred ~34 km east of Coober Pedy, which lie in the northern part of the Gawler Craton near the southern margin of the Mabel Creek Ridge crustal element and to the north of the east-trending Karari Fault Zone, have been explored for possible economic epithermal/hydrothermal IOCG mineralisation. Following the conduct of three-dimensional inversion modelling of available regional geophysical data, part of a multi-licence detailed airborne magnetic and radiometric survey was flown over EL 4491 for Teck by contractor Aeroquest Airborne during May-June 2011, with a north-south line spacing of 200 m. The resulting data provided improved resolution of magnetic features and structural trends. However, the magnetic signature within the now relinquished parts of the license that was revealed by 187 line km of the survey coverage is rather weak, indicating that the basement magnetic sources probably underlie a thick cover sequence of basinal sediments. Because of this likelihood, Teck decided that this piece of ground was less attractive to continue to hold in expectation of being able to find the targeted buried IOCG mineralisation. Also within the subject relinquished ground, 6 new gravity stations were read as part of an infill ground gravity survey acquired over parts of the licence by Atlas Geophysics for Teck during June-July 2011. Conduct of the survey was partly funded by the SA Government's PACE Initiative. No dense features of interest were revealed by the new gravity data.
