A small area located on the southern Lake Torrens Plains immediately west of the ABC Range was taken up to allow evaluation of its potential for having buried economic sedimentary coal and/or uranium mineralisation occurrences. There are no historical drilling data available within the subject tenement boundary, but the historic drilling done immediately north at Wilkatana during the late 1950s intersected thin coal beds in a number of wells which had been drilled to test for Cambrian hosted oil. Licensee Torrens Energy has lately drilled two shallow geothermal wells, Theoden 2 and Thorin 1 completed during 2009, as part of a separate exploration programme for geothermal energy being conducted within its superimposed GEL 285. These rotary mud/ diamond cored open holes both targeted flat-lying Torrens Hinge Zone rocks to obtain a subsurface temperature gradient. No mineralisation or coal was intersected by them. Stratigraphic details of these holes have been extracted from their respective well completion reports, and are provided herein. The geophysical information available for the licence area consists of State-sponsored regional aeromagnetic, gravity and seismic survey data which were collected by Torrens Energy as part of its geothermal exploration activities. The regional gravity data image for this area shows that much of the northern half of EL 4298 lies over a gravity low, which is interpreted to represent a basinal structure likely to host coal measures. Two principal seismic data sets, one acquired by Torrens Energy and the other provided by Geoscience Australia, were re-interpreted along with the other geophysical data to hand, as part the input to making a preliminary 3D geological model of the local basin architecture and stratigraphy. A summary of this model is presented which shows that a thick sequence of relatively flat to slightly inclined Cambrian and Neoproterozoic rocks are probably present. It was concluded that further more stringent geological modelling, plus post-processing of the seismic line data to try to resolve early time responses which could reveal the topology of the Tertiary stratigraphic interval, would be required to assist in planning any effective exploratory drilling for coal or uranium. A decision to allow mineral exploration tenure to lapse at the end of licence year 3 was based in part on the perceived excessive thickness of poorly known cover sediments (estimated at 1500-2000 m), along with access delay issues for the Wilkatana South prospect caused by Aboriginal heritage protection complications.
