An area centred ~70 km north-east of Ceduna has been explored by Iluka Resources for possible economic buried Tertiary heavy mineral sands (HM) marine placer deposits. The only work performed on EL 4545 has been the conduct during 2008 of limited regional reconnaissance exploratory traverse aircore drilling, when 4 open vertical NQ holes with a total penetration of 99.1 m were drilled at a 400 m hole spacing along roadside traverses. No HM mineralisation was encountered, and no drill cuttings samples were submitted for assaying. Current exploration models indicate that Eocene deposition in this area probably occurred in an estuarine environment, a setting which is hydrodynamically unfavourable for concentrating HM. Because Iluka's drilling completed here and in its surrounding tenure (ELs 3267/4408 Pureba South and 3330/4546 Kalanbi) has indicated low HM prospectivity in this region, it was decided in 2013 to fully surrender the subject licence.
