A large, ~1300 square km licence area extending NE-SW and centred ~100 km west of Tarcoola and ~170 km NNW of Ceduna was taken up to explore part of the eastern margin of the Eucla Basin for possible economic buried Tertiary detrital heavy mineral (HM) marine sand placer deposits. During the first licence year, PlatSearch completed an assessment of the heavy mineral sands potential of the area, which included logging and sampling of stored drill cuttings from shallow regional traverse drilling which had been conducted by PIRSA. Examination of the sediment samples identified weak to modestly anomalous heavy mineral contents of up to 0.3% over 10 m thick zones, with logging indicating that the finer grained shoreline sand sequences, which PlatSearch thought are more likely to host high grade HM placer deposits (similar to those present at Iluka’s Mojave deposit, where beach sands with >1% average HM grades have been defined over widths of 1 – 3.5 km along a strike length of 8 km), are likely to lie along the Barton Range in the south-western corner of the tenement. During licence Year 2, no field work was done. Joint venture partner Bemax Resources reviewed the targets previously identified by PlatSearch, but decided that their probable versus implied stratigraphic settings were not favourable for the deposition of heavy mineral sands, so the HM prospectivity of the tenement was downgraded. However, Bemax' broader regional investigations of Tertiary sedimentation highlighted that the tenement could have potential for buried roll front uranium mineralisation, as minor occurrences of this has been confirmed within Tertiary palaeochannels in nearby exploration tenements, and from recognising linear topographic lows, these palaeochannels were interpreted to also cross through EL 4403. During licence Year 3, limited further desktop investigations of sedimentary uranium prospectivity were conducted by Bemax, who eventally decided to leave the joint venture. No exploration was conducted by PlatSearch following cessation of the joint venture. Tenure was allowed to lapse at expiry.
