Two adjoining areas centred ~ 75 km east of Tailem Bend have been explored for possible economic buried Tertiary marine placer heavy mineral sand (HMS) deposits that may have been formed within the Murray Basin sedimentary succession, as winnowed strandings that were deposited along Late Miocene to Late Pliocene regressive shorelines. A single exploratory/stratigraphic RC aircore drilling campaign was completed by the licensee during October 2012, when 78 vertical holes were completed along eighteen traverses for a total penetration of 2685.3 m. The majority of the drill targets comprised aeromagnetic anomalies that had been identified in data from a previous HMS explorer's (Renison Gold Corp. - RGC) 1998 airborne magnetic survey. Between two and nine holes were drilled by Iluka across its selected anomalies at an ~80 m hole collar separation. Two of the traverses (ST061 and ST049) were drilled to test the location of RGC's previously discovered palaeo-beach strandlines, that are called Matilda and Shaggy Ridge. Six of the holes were drilled by Iluka across the two tenements as stratigraphic tests, to gain a better understanding of the regional geology. All of the holes drilled were terminated while they were still within the cover sedimentary sequence [barring hole S01771 which was stopped in 'rock' - ?perhaps a large Permian erratic]. The holes were selectively sampled at 1.5 metre depth intervals for laboratory heavy mineral analysis (503 samples taken) of the wet sieved >53 microns to minus 2 mm grainsize fraction. Minor amounts of HMS were encountered in many holes, but the rutile and zircon contents of the grainsize separates of samples from the mineralised intercepts were low, with the heavy mineral assemblages usually being dominated by trash minerals and ferruginous diagenetic material. It was concluded that the potential for the two subject licences to host any high value HMS deposit that would match Iluka Resources' business requirements has been fully tested by that company and by RGC's former work. Consequently it was decided to fully surrender both tenements.
