The subject licence is one of four located to the east and south-east of the Olympic Dam deposit, on which greenfields exploration for economic IOCG-U mineralisation is being carried out by Western Mining in joint venture with the Power and Nuclear Fuels Corp. of Japan. During November-December 1994, a semi-regional gravity survey was carried out over portions of three of these licences on a 1 km x 1 km grid, to improve the existing coarse 10 km x 10 km BMR gravity coverage. On EL 1975, 168 out of a total of 740 gravity stations were read. During March 1995, Kevron Geophysics flew an airborne magnetic and radiometric survey over the eastern half of the JV project ELs, for a total of 6439.7 line km of profiles along north-south flight lines spaced 250 m apart, with a mean sensor altitude of 50 m. 46% of this survey coverage was located over EL 1975. During March 1996, an infill gravity survey was acquired on two adjoining licences at 500 m x 500 m grid spacing, with 48 of 113 stations read on EL 1975. Subsequent geophysical modelling of all the new geophysical data identified two prospects on EL 1975 containing possible future drill targets. One diamond-tailed percussion drillhole was scheduled to be drilled into basement to ~450 m depth on a residual gravity high late in 1996, but this work had to be postponed indefinitely owing to delays in obtaining aboriginal heritage clearances, and because of budget constraints. No further field work was done on EL 1975 during the next 37 months, until tenure expired. The negotiations already underway for obtaining land access to conduct planned activities became more protracted and complicated due to the Australian High Court's Wik Native Title decision. In the interim, WMC continued to upgrade its regional geological and geophysical databases, and performed a desktop ranking study of identified prospects. It was decided over this period to concentrate a majority of future exploration effort on the Project's 'core' licence area of EL 2208.
