A small area centred ~115 km north-east of Port Augusta has been explored for possible buried economic Neoproterozoic stratiform or stratabound epithermal/hydrothermal copper and gold deposits, and for placer gold or magnetite deposits, as well as for possible diamondiferous kimberlites. During licence Year 3, David Miller re-assessed the viability of continuing with his iron ore exploration on the tenement. Consideration of the assay results obtained from surface sampling of magnetite and haematite - rich strata (BIF) of the Holowilena Ironstone, which his mapping had shown to outcrop over ~800 m of strike length, indicated that they have only economically marginal grades, averaging 39.8% Fe2O3, whilst having a high level of contained minerals such as silica which are undesirable for steelmaking further degrades their value as ore. Thus these BIF rocks appeared not to be suitable as a source of direct shipping iron ore. Accordingly, it was decided to partially relinquish the ground that they occupy: a single portion of the licence comprising its entire eastern half, covering 41 square km, was relinquished at year end on 15/11/2012 (see Env 12387). This block includes a very prominent outcrop located at the northern end of the BIF exposure which it was realised may have aesthetic and cultural significance. During licence Year 4, David Miller shifted his attention towards resuming exploration for gold and base metals. But he quickly reasoned that the slightly elevated gold values, up to 115 ppb Au, which he had obtained in 2008 from re-sampling old Utah Development Co. drillholes, are clearly not significant enough to warrant him outlaying money on trying to obtain land access approvals for undertaking a small drilling programme. Taking this viewpoint stymied the possibility of doing further work on the two remaining small licence sub-blocks, and so tenure of that ground was allowed to lapse.
