A group of five adjacent licences were taken out near Emu Field in the southern Arckaringa Basin region, ~250 km west-northwest of Coober Pedy, to explore for possible buried Tertiary, palaeodrainage sediment-sourced, palaeomarine shoreface placer deposits of heavy mineral sands (HM). Diatreme believed that the coastline of the proto Eucla Basin had formerly stretched inland as far as the location of these tenement areas, and it was hoped that any preserved strata of this coastline, if present, might be rich in HM occurrences which it was inferred had originally been sourced from the nearby Musgrave Block. The licensee had previously conducted similar exploration on another group of tenements located a short distance to the north-east and east, with limited success resulting from its shallow exploratory drilling (see Env 11826). While palaeomarine beach facies sediments were discovered, very little HM was associated with them, indicating that effective trapsites remained to be identified. During the sole year of tenure of the subject tenements, no field work was done. Office-based interpretation of digital elevation model (DEM) data for this part of the Arckaringa Basin region identified some possible heavy mineral sands trap sites on interpreted early Tertiary palaeo-shorelines. However, due to emerging budgetary constraints on the company's activities, no drilling was done to test these before the decision was made to allow tenure to lapse. The envisaged prospectivity therefore remains valid.
