An area centred ~ 95 km north-west of Renmark has been explored for possible economic buried Tertiary marine placer heavy mineral sand (HMS) deposits that may have been formed within the Murray Basin sedimentary succession, as winnowed strandings that were deposited along Late Miocene to Late Pliocence regressive shorelines. A single exploratory/stratigraphic RC aircore drilling campaign was completed by the licensee during September-October 2012, when 96 vertical holes were completed along four regional traverses for a total penetration of 5861 m. Three north-south traverses (ST32-ST34) separated by 10 to 13 km were drilled at an 800 m hole collar spacing. Upon the discovery of favourable stratigraphy or minor HM intersections, traverse infill holes were drilled at 400 m spacing. A fourth traverse (ST31) was drilled in the southern portion of the tenement to confirm some drillhole sample low grade HM assay results that had been reported by Aberfoyle Resources in 1988 (3 m @ 2.47% HM in hole LW04-30). There the new holes were spaced ~80 m apart. No significant mineralisation was intersected. Minor HM lenses (<0.5%) were intersected in most holes within Loxton-Parilla Sands foreshore facies. The tenor of localised higher grade HM mineralisation reported by Aberfoyle was supported by results from the latest drilling, but a binocular optical stereoscopic examination of those sediments suggested that the HM assemblage consists mainly of iron rich minerals. During the second licence year, some outstanding sample assay results were received and the results of the 2012 drilling programme were reviewed. A conclusion was reached that the existing drilling density across the tenement is sufficient to detect the presence of any high grade HM deposit. However, all of the HM mineralisation that has been encountered so far is dominated by iron oxides, rock, pyrite, and trash minerals, with only low amounts of valuable HM. Therefore it was decided that the tenement should be surrendered.
