An area centred approximately 60 km south-southwest of Woomera was taken up to explore the IOCG mineralisation potential of an isolated, oval-shaped regional gravity anomaly called the Evelyn Dam prospect, which licensee Archer Exploration thought might represent the effect of intense haematite alteration in the concealed basement rocks. Early field work consisted of the acquisition of infill gravity coverage over this anomaly during October 2007, when 1978 new gravity stations were read on a regular 400 m x 400 m grid spacing, with two additional detailed profiles being read at 100 m station spacing along a north-south traverse of 46 stations and an east-west traverse of 39 stations. The new gravity data was merged with the existing PIRSA regional data, and the target anomaly was modelled by consultant Jim Hanneson as a discrete 3 mGal residual high with a likely source estimated to lie at 400-500 m depth. Late in 2008, some close-spaced infill aeromagnetic profiles were acquired over the prospect to better delineate the positions of Gairdner Dolerite dykes that cross the gravity anomaly and thereby complicate its interpretation. Because encountering any of the dykes while drilling would be a major physical hindrance in efficiently testing the underling IOCG target, the detailed magnetic data was needed for planning a diamond drillhole trajectory that would prevent this happening. Subsequently, two possible drill sites were selected on the western side of the gravity anomaly which satisfied the dyke avoidance factor. Unfortunately, the next stage of work, exploratory drilling, was unable to be started over the succeeding four years because of protracted and, ultimately, failed negotiations carried out by Archer Exploration with two changing and slow to act groups of Native Title claimants who had filed overlapping claims. A successful application for a grant of PACE Initiative Year 5 drilling subsidy funding had to be left in abeyance when the necessary clearances for on-ground access were not forthcoming. Early in 2012, Archer Exploration drafted an agreement with BHP Billiton which would allow the latter to elect either to explore or to purchase the subject tenement.
