An area centred approximately 30 km south-west of Woomera was taken up to explore the IOCG mineralisation potential of an isolated, circular outline regional gravity anomaly called the Island Dam prospect, seen to have a semi-coincident magnetic high anomaly, which licensee Archer Exploration thought might represent the effect of intense haematite alteration in the concealed basement rocks. Early field work consisted of the acquisition of infill gravity coverage over this anomaly during September-October and November 2007. A western survey grid comprised coverage at 800 m x 1600 m, totalling 323 new stations. An eastern survey grid was read at 800 m x 800 m spacing, for a total of 652 new stations. This grid was also profiled with two detailed E-W lines having stations 400 m apart, for a total of 35 additional stations. The new gravity data was merged with the existing PIRSA regional data, and the target anomaly was modelled by consultant Jim Hanneson as a discrete 2 mGal residual high >5 km in diameter, with a likely source estimated to lie at ~900 m depth. Late in 2008, some close-spaced infill aeromagnetic profiles were acquired over the prospect to better delineate the positions of Gairdner Dolerite dykes that cross the gravity anomaly and thereby complicate its interpretation. Because encountering any of the dykes while drilling would be a major physical hindrance in efficiently testing the underlying IOCG-U target, the detailed magnetic data was needed by Archer Exploration for planning a diamond drillhole trajectory that would prevent this happening. Grant Koch, consulting geophysicist, used image processing of the infill gravity data and new high resolution magnetic data to show that the Island Lagoon gravity anomaly is most probably the result of the confluence of several Gairdner Dolerite dykes. In view of this interpretation, Archer Exploration consequently downgraded the Island Lagoon anomaly as a possible IOCG-U target, and deferred its plans to drill test that anomaly. However, the company believed that another gravity feature exists to the west which cannot be explained by the presence of dykes, so that anomaly may be due to the presence of an IOCG-U mineralised system. Over the next four years, ongoing delays to gaining environmental approval for drilling access, caused mainly by conflict between local Native Title claimant groups, prevented any significant new exploration from occurring. Some extremely limited surface geochemical grab sampling of dubious merit or relevance was carried out during brief reconnaissance visits made to other parts of the licence. Late in 2011, ownership of the reduced licence was transferred from Pirie Exploration to corporate affiliate Kensington Exploration Pty Ltd. Operatorship remained with the parent company Archer Exploration. Early in 2012, Archer Exploration drafted an agreement with BHP Billiton which would allow the latter to elect either to explore or to purchase the subject tenement.
